Abdominoplasty, also commonly known as Tummy Tuck, is a cosmetic surgery whose goal is to give the abdomen a nice, flat and firm appearance, with a narrow waist.
This surgery is used when the skin of the belly area is more distended and flaccid than normal, accumulating excess skin and fat in that area, and the muscles of the abdomen also lose tonicity. All this is common in those who have lost or gained a lot of weight in a very short time, and also in women who have had one or several pregnancies with a considerable weight gain.
It is important to keep in mind that abdominoplasty is NOT a surgery to lose weight, but is used to eliminate and correct excess skin and fat, as well as the loss of elasticity, of the abdominal area, which do not improve with exercise or diets.
Currently, abdominoplasty has become one of the most demanded cosmetic surgeries, mostly in women after pregnancy or other hormonal changes, especially after 40 years.
What is abdominoplasty?
During abdominoplasty surgery can be treated and corrected:
- Excess fat.
- Excess skin and/or lack of elasticity.
- Correct the muscles of the abdominal area if they have lost their firmness.
- Remodeling the shape of the abdomen, correcting imperfections or deformities.
There are different techniques to perform this surgery, including traditional abdominoplasty, mini-abdominoplasty (simpler and shorter, but used only when the problem is located only below the navel) or endoscopy abdominoplasty, than in those cases where it is possible allows smaller incisions to be made to perform surgery.
Depending on the problems to be treated and in which areas of the abdomen they are located, the technique used in each case will be one or the other, as appropriate, as well as the duration of the surgery, which can vary between 2 and 5 hours approximately.
Regardless of the technique used, abdominoplasty surgery is always performed under general anesthesia.
Postoperative and recovery after abdominoplasty
After surgery, the patient remains hospitalized normally 1 or 2 days (in some cases up to a maximum of 3 days).
During the first days after surgery it is normal to feel some pain, so it is usual for the specialist to prescribe some analgesics to take if necessary.
During the first weeks after the intervention, the patient is instructed to wear a girdle or similar elastic device, in order to improve the results as much as possible.
Recovery time after surgery can vary between several weeks and a couple of months, depending on the patient’s physical condition before surgery: if the patient’s muscles are stronger, recovery will be faster. Of course, it is essential to always follow the instructions of the specialist for a correct and faster recovery.
The final results, including the total healing of the incisions made during surgery, are visible approximately one year later.
