Mammoplasty

Breast augmentation or reduction: mammoplasty

What is a mammoplasty?

When we talk about mammoplasty, we refer to surgical procedures that aim to model the patient’s breast in any of its modalities: augmentation, reduction, lifting and reconstruction.

Mammoplasty can be augmentation, if the surgical technique is aimed at achieving an increase in breast volume through prostheses or silicone implants, or a reduction mammoplasty, if it is to modify the mammary size of the patient by eliminating the fatty tissue, breast and skin.

Reduction mammoplasty

Breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty is an operation of aesthetic surgery whose main objective is the reduction of the size of the breast to adapt it to the aesthetic and functional requirements of the patient.

Breast reduction is usually done to alleviate a physical problem (discomfort in the back), rather than for purely aesthetic reasons, although some people decide to reduce it to improve their appearance after reduction.

Operative procedure of breast reduction

As in all surgical procedures, the previous medical examination is essential to detect any possible anomaly that might contraindicate the operation.

A specialist will perform an examination of the breasts with the aim of evaluating the structure and volume and advising you on the most convenient procedure for your case.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, with the patient remaining asleep during the operation.

A breast reduction usually takes between 2 and 3 hours, although in certain cases it may be longer.

The surgery is done through the removal of excess skin, fat and breast tissue and replacing the areola and nipple in its new position.

Generally the incisions are shaped like an anchor placed around the areola, in a vertical line down from the areola and in a horizontal line in the groove below the breast.

Postoperative

During the first hours after surgery you may feel moderate pain that is easily controlled with analgesics. The pain will improve in a period of 48 to 72 hours.

The patient is usually discharged after 2 or 3 days.

Increasing mammoplasty

Breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty is an aesthetic surgery operation whose objective is to increase the contour and volume of the breast and improve the appearance of small breasts, well balancing it, in case of asymmetric breasts, or by implanting filled breast prostheses of silicone gel.

Operative procedure

This operation lasts approximately one hour, but depending on the patient it may last a little longer.

In a first consultation, the specialist in breast surgery will explain how the intervention and the process is. Afterwards, he will perform an anatomical examination, taking into account aspects such as the volume of the breasts, possible asymmetries, the degree of inclemency or the pectoral musculature. It is also necessary to do some medical tests to confirm that you are suitable for this operation.

The anesthetic technique is usually general anesthesia without intubation, which allows comfortable surgery without the patient feeling any pain and waking up quickly and comfortably.

The prosthesis can be placed in two areas: under the pectoral muscle or under the mammary gland.

The incision that is made is always minimal: it is usually done at the lower edge of the areola; while, on other occasions, a small incision is made in the lower edge of the breast or the implant can also be placed axillary.

Postoperative

Like any surgery, the process requires an immediate postoperative period and a hospital stay of about 24 hours is essential.

The recovery time to return to the usual routine can be 3-4 days, and even after a month can not perform intense physical activity.

The pain is minimal if the prosthesis is placed in front of the pectoral muscle, or moderate if it is placed behind the pectoral muscle. Sensitivity will also be lost to a greater or lesser degree depending on where the incision is made, but it is fully recovered within a maximum period of six months.

In any case, this surgery will leave a small scar barely noticeable.
