Back or arm pain: causes and treatments

Back or arm pain: causes and treatments

Pain in the areas of the back or arms are often caused by problems of the musculoskeletal system, either due to injuries or other degenerative pathologies or conditions.

In this article, Dr. Antonio Narváez, head of orthopedic surgery, traumatology and sports medicine service at Vithas Xanit Internacional, tells us what are some of the most frequent causes of back and/or arm pain, as well as what their treatments are, which may vary depending on the severity or how advanced the case is.

Injuries and conditions that cause shoulder pain

Shoulder pain can be due to various causes. In people under 40 years of age, the cause is usually trauma or overload from sports activities, while in older patients the most common cause is a degenerative disease in the muscles that mobilize the shoulder (rotator cuff), producing partial breaks in the beginning, which can become complete breaks if not treated.

In these cases, the initial treatment is conservative (physiotherapy, medication, rest…), but if there is a tear in the rotator cuff tendons, minimally invasive surgery is used through arthroscopy, obtaining very good results.

Herniated disc

It consists of an abnormal displacement of one of the intervertebral discs, compressing a nerve root, which causes pain and sensory alterations. In the first place, it is usually treated conservatively with medication (anti-inflammatories, corticosteroids, analgesics) and rest, which gives good results in many cases.

When this conservative treatment does not produce improvement or if sphincter disorders or muscle paralysis appear, then it is necessary to intervene through surgery.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

It occurs when the carpal ligament, located in the wrist, causes the median nerve to become trapped between this ligament and the other bones and ligaments of the wrist. In this way, when said nerve is trapped and pressed, pain and numbness occurs in the first three fingers of the hand, being more noticeable these symptoms overnight.

The initial treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome is carried out with medication and night splints, but a large number of cases require surgery, which consists of releasing the median nerve by cutting the carpal ligament that compresses it in the wrist. The results of this surgery are usually very good, with the symptoms disappearing.

Vithas hospitals are safe hospitals

Vithas’ 19 hospitals are safe hospitals for patients and professionals thanks to the implementation of strict safety protocols against covid-19. Among the measures implemented, the establishment of two different circuits stands out: one for people with symptoms compatible with covid-19, and the other for other patients.

Additionally, we supply masks and hydroalcoholic gel to all people who come to the hospital for any reason. In addition, the Group is carrying out massive virus detection tests on all personnel, who are equipped with all the necessary self-protection measures.

A security that has always been reinforced thanks to the fact that all Vithas hospitals implement the strict protocols of the Joint Commission International, world reference body that accredits patient safety and healthcare excellence.
