Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery whose objective is to remove excess body fat localized in some specific areas of the body to reshape them, such as abdomen, outer and inner thighs, buttocks, knees…
Liposuction is also known as liposculpture or lipoaspiration.
It is important to note that liposuction is NOT a weight loss procedure, for losing weight there are other treatments of bariatric surgery: gastric balloon, gastric band, gastric sleeve…
The liposuction surgery is performed using a cannula to suction the fat cells in skin layers, this is introduced through minimally invasive incisions of 2 to 5 mm. Depending on the technique used, there are two different depths at which the fat cells are suctioned: those located in the superficial skin layers, or those in the deeper layers.
Depending on the area(s) to be treated and the individual case, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, locoregional or general anesthesia.
The duration of the liposuction surgery also varies depending of the area(s) to be treated and the amount of fat to be removed: from 15 minutes to 2 hours.
In most cases, the surgeon removes about 2 to 5 liters of fat during the liposuction surgery. When the estimated volume of fat to be suctioned is too high, the liposuction is split into two different surgeries.
Liposuction post-operative, follow-ups and results
After the liposuction surgery, the length of the stay in the hospital varies, taking into account the quantity of fat removed during the procedure: from 1-2 hours for smaller liposuction surgeries, which are considered as ambulatory, to 1 or 2 days in the case of large liposuction procedures that requires general anesthesia.
Three days after the procedure, a postoperative follow-up is required, and others follow ups are needed 10 and 21 days after.
The expected results are visible about 1 month later after the liposuction surgery, and final results about one year after surgery. Although liposuction results are permanent, they also depend on the lifestyle and habits of the patients.
