> GYNECOLOGICAL CHECK-UP

Gynecological checks are vital in order to search for numerous specific pathologies in women.

Therefore, it is recommended that women have an annual gynecological check-up from the moment that they become sexually active, and a breast check from the age of 30 onwards.
Depending on their family history, these gynecological and breast checks may need to be more frequent.

Checks
Types of gynecological checks and reasons for having them :
In reality, there are two types of gynecological checks :

The systematic control
The objective of this is to detect diseases in patients with no known pathology.

Check-ups for patients with an existing pathology
The objective is to diagnose and treat the illness.

Reasons for checks for patients with known pathologies are:

  • An abnormal or abundant bleed.
  • Absence of menstruation: la amenorrea
  • Leukorrhea: abundant secretions without blood.
  • Pelvic pain
  • Sterility
  • Breast pathologies
  • Sexual disorders.

Gynecological explorations
Explorations of the genital organs

  • The gynecological check includes various explorations:
  • An exploration and palpation of the stomach
  • An exploration of the external genital organs in order to check for infectious pathologies
  • An exploration of the pelvis: neck of the womb (to detect for cancer), cervical mucous (to detect for sterility), and uterine cavity.
  • Cytology to detect for cervical cancer.
  • Vaginal exploration (check of the pelvic cavity)

Breast Exploration
This is carried out in order to check for certain types of anomalies such as nodules, abnormal secretions from the breast etc…

  • Exploration: dissymmetry, anomalíes…
  • Palpation for the detection of nodules

This is a very important exploration in the early detection of breast cancer.
Diagnostic tests
The mammogram
The mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. It is a diagnostic test used to detect and diagnose breast pathologies.

It is recommended to have a mammogram performed during the first 15 days of a woman’s menstrual cycle as the breasts are less tense and the images obtained are more visible.
In cases of women without a known pathology, a mammogram should be carried out annually.
The mammogram becomes more important with age, especially in menopausal women.

The breast ultrasound
In the event that the mammogram shows up an abnormality, the gynecologist may request a breast ultrasound is carried out.
This technique is able to visualise the breast tissue with the help of ultrasound.

Magnetic Resonnance of the breast
This can be carried out in conjunction with a mammogram or a breast ultrasound.
The magnetic resonnance enables us to obtain more detailed and precise images of the breast than other tests are able to offer.

The transvaginal ultrasound
The transvaginal ultrasound is carried out during an exploration of the genital organs. The probe is introduced into the vagina and enables the specialist to visualise the uterus and ovaries, and to detect any possible abnormalities.
