New fusion biopsy to treat prostate cancer

New fusion biopsy to treat prostate cancer

With the aim of further improving the assistance to our patients, at Vithas Xanit International we have incorporated fusion biopsy, a new technique that represents a great advance in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

Next, Dr. Juan Arocena, head of the Urology Service at Vithas Xanit Internacional, explains the importance of early diagnosis and treatment in cases of prostate cancer, what is a fusion biopsy and the important advantages of this new technique.

Prostate cancer and the importance of its early detection

Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in men, being also among the most frequent pathologies of the prostate: it is estimated that 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer throughout his life.

The best treatment option for prostate cancer is still its early detection, since, applying a personalized treatment in time, the cure rate is very high, 90%.

However, in its initial stages it does not produce obvious symptoms, so the only way to detect it early is still to go to the specialist for a urological review.

Prostate cancer affects mostly men between 55 and 69 years of age, so reviews to detect it are recommended periodically from 50 years onwards.

Fusion biopsy and its advantages

The new fusion biopsy incorporated into the Vithas Xanit International hospital allows a much more reliable diagnosis in the detection of prostate cancer than the conventional biopsy used previously, reaching 90% reliability, compared to 50% of the conventional one, according to recent studies.

This new technique fuses images of the prostate multiparametric magnetic resonance with real-time 3D ultrasound images, outlining the suspicious areas and guiding the surgeon precisely to its exact location.

Thanks to this more accurate and detailed information, a much more accurate diagnosis and evaluation of the disease progression is achieved, making it possible to decide more reliably the most appropriate solution for the patient. The high quality of the images helps the specialist to make decisions safely even in cases difficult to diagnose.

When applying therapy or treatment, the greater information provided by this new system allows treating only the affected area, applying targeted therapy using minimally invasive technique, using a computer-assisted protocol. In this way the patient is treated with an effective procedure that preserves the maximum quality of life.

Another advantage of this diagnostic technique with respect to the conventional ones is that, as it is performed perineally, rectal bleeding, sepsis risk and infection rate are reduced as much as possible, shortening recovery times. In addition, fusion biopsy is an outpatient procedure with local or general anesthesia.
