In which consists knee replacement surgery?
Knee replacement surgery, also known as Knee arthroplasty, consists of replacing the part of the damaged, worn or diseased bone and cartilages that are part of the knee (the femur, the patella and the tibia) with an artificial joint prosthesis, which has three elements:
- A femoral prosthesis, which is an articulated metal piece fixed to the femur.
- A patella or femorotibial prosthesis, which is a piece of plastic that which enables movement and helps to stabilize the joint.
- Tibia prosthesis: this is a prosthesis upon which rests the joint and which is fixed to the tibia.
When knee replacement surgery is necessary?
Knee replacement surgery is usually necessary when joint wear or damage to the knee causes reduced mobility and pain. It is most commonly performed in patients with osteoarthritis, but there are also others reasons for knee surgery:
- Other knee diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis.
- Certain knee fractures.
- Knee deformity with pain.
Although this is a very frequent surgery and in Vithas Xanit International Hospital it is performed using minimally invasive techniques, knee replacement surgery is still considered major surgery, and normally only is recommended if other treatments like physiotherapy haven´t reduce pain or improve mobility.
Duration of the knee surgery and anesthesia
The knee surgery lasts 2 hours approximately and is carried out under general or locoregional (spinal) anesthesia.
Types of knee surgery
In most cases a total knee replacement surgery is done, but in some cases a partial knee replacement can be performed instead, resulting in a smaller operation with shorter hospital stay and recovery period after the surgery.
How long is the stay in the hospital after knee replacement surgery?
The usual hospital stay after operation is between 5 and 10 days, depending of the particular case.
Rehabilitation after knee replacement surgery
The knee replacement is a surgery which requires an intensive rehabilitation for several weeks beginning from the day after the total knee prosthesis is fitted.
Postoperative follow-up knee surgery:
The knee prosthesis usually lasts approximately over 20 years, especially if the new knee prosthesis does not undergo too much effort and is properly cared for.
To ensure that everything is ok, follow-up X-rays are recommended, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 years after surgery.
