The importance of urological reviews in men

Prevention and treatments for the most common urological problems

The problems that are commonly treated in urology consultations are varied, although most of the urological problems that require surgical treatment are urinary pathologies. Diagnosis of these problems is usually relatively simple, although treatment can be complex, depending on how advanced the disease is and its severity.

Next, Dr. Juan Arocena García, head of the urology service of Vithas Xanit Internacional, tells us which are some of the most frequent pathologies in urology, their treatments and how to prevent them.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia

Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) consists of abnormal growth of the prostate gland, and is one of the most common prostate problems after 50 years of age, affecting approximately 90% of men over 80 years of age.

As a consequence of this abnormal growth of the prostate, symptoms such as urinating several times during the night and frequently during the day, difficulty urinating, dribbling, etc. appear.

Traditionally, the most effective treatment for this pathology is surgical, although more recently a new technique has been incorporated to treat the prostate using steam, which is minimally invasive, with fewer risks and side effects than traditional surgeries.

As with other urological pathologies, one of the best ways to prevent it are annual urological check-ups, from the age of 50, in order to detect and treat it early.

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is another of the most common pathologies in urology and one of the most serious, being one of the most commonly diagnosed types of cancer in men. However, despite its severity, if detected and diagnosed early, its cure rate is very high.

The problem is that prostate cancer in its early stages does not cause obvious symptoms yet, so in order to detect it when it is still in these stages and to be able to treat it as soon as possible, tests are performed for its early diagnosis in urological examinations, reason why these reviews are especially important.

Furthermore, recently has been incorporated a new, even more efficient and reliable diagnostic technique for the detection and treatment of prostate cancer, the fusion biopsy.

Therefore, an annual check-up is recommended for all men from the age of 50, and in the case of a family history of prostate or kidney cancer, from the age of 40. In addition to this annual check-up, you should also go for a check-up in case of appearance of symptoms such as difficulty or discomfort when urinating, blood in the urine, pain in the side towards the genital area, etc.

Regarding the treatment once detected, it is carried out using therapies and/or laparoscopic surgical techniques, the most minimally invasive possible in each case, preserving the highest quality of life for the patient.

Prostate infections

Prostate infections are caused by common germs that settle in the prostate causing pain and other discomfort when urinating, which can be very intense.

This problem frequently affects younger men. It is important to treat these infections promptly and appropriately, since otherwise they can become chronic, so it is important to go to the urologist as soon as possible when symptoms appear.

Stones in the urinary tract

Calculi or “stones” in the urinary tract are another common urological pathology, which can occur from the kidneys to the bladder. These stones can cause what is known as renal colic, causing great pain.

Treatments to remove these stones are performed by minimally invasive endoscopic surgery without the need for open surgery, with techniques such as shock wave lithotripsy or laser treatment.

To prevent its appearance in patients prone to urinary tract stones, a detailed analysis of the causes that originate them is carried out. Such patients are also recommended to drink plenty of water, which helps prevent the formation of these stones.

Vithas hospitals are safe hospitals

Vithas’ 19 hospitals are safe hospitals for patients and professionals thanks to the implementation of strict safety protocols against covid-19. Among the measures implemented, the establishment of two different circuits stands out: one for people with symptoms compatible with covid-19, and the other for other patients.

Additionally, we supply masks and hydroalcoholic gel to all people who come to the hospital for any reason. In addition, the Group is carrying out massive virus detection tests on all personnel, who are equipped with all the necessary self-protection measures.

A security that has always been reinforced thanks to the fact that all Vithas hospitals implement the strict protocols of the Joint Commission International, world reference body that accredits patient safety and healthcare excellence.
