Your national health system and you private medical insurance will be able to provide you with relevant information and assist you in submitting the appropriate forms for this purpose.
European Community Countries
There is a new directive governing cross-border healthcare which was adopted in 2011.
Section 56 allows the European patient to undergo medical treatment in all countries belonging to the EEC, as long as the treatment is medically necessary and is available within the national health system in the patient’ s country of origin.
Cover is provided for surgical and medical treatments in state hospitals as well as private clinics.
In most cases, you will pay for your medical treatment in advance, and will be able to request a refund once you have returned to your country of origin.
A limited amount will be reimbursed dependent upon the price of this particular medical treatment in your country of origin.
In some cases, and dependent upon the type of surgery or treatment required, prior authorization will be necessary.
Mutual insurance companies and private medical practitioners will generally reimburse part of the treatment.
The United States
The American health care system does not reimburse medical or surgical treatments provided outside of the United States, except for medical emergencies.
There are some private health insures that will partially reimburse your treatment depending on the particular company and the treatment carried out. The amount reimbursed ranges from 60% to 80% of the total invoice costs for the surgery and/or medical treatment.
In this case, you will have to pay beforehand and request a refund once you have returned to your country of origin.
