Tips for spring pollen allergies

Tips for spring pollen allergies

Like every year, with the arrival of spring, cases of allergy to pollen intensify. Although pollen is harmless, the organism of those allergic to it identifies it as an invasive agent and overreacts, causing the annoying and well-known symptoms of allergy: sneezing, watery eyes, nasal secretions, etc.

Next, Dr. Clara Isabel Pérez Padilla, from the allergology service at Vithas Xanit internacional, answers some of the most common questions, along with some quick tips to avoid allergic reactions to pollen as much as possible.

How can we know what types of pollen we are allergic to?

Not all people with an allergy to pollen are due to the same type of pollen and, in addition, it is possible to have an allergy to one or more types. It is important to know what types of pollen we are allergic to, since each plant pollinates at a certain time of year, so that if we know what types of pollens affect us, we will also know when we must be more careful.

To find out what type of pollen causes us allergic reactions, we must go to the allergist, who, by performing a simple test, will be able to tell us which types affect us.

How to know when the pollen concentration is higher?

It is clear that to avoid contact with pollen the first thing to do is try to avoid leaving home as much as possible when the pollen concentration is higher. It should be borne in mind that during the hours around sunrise (from 5 to 10 in the morning) and at sunset (from 7 to 10 at night) the concentration of pollen is higher. Windy days also have an impact on more pollen in the air.

In addition to taking this into account, today we can also find various web services and mobile applications that can provide us with more up-to-date and detailed information on pollen concentrations in our area.

How to prevent contact with pollen when we are at home?

When we are at home, we must try to keep the windows closed, especially during the hours and days with the highest pollen concentration. To ventilate the rooms, try to take advantage of the hours with the lowest pollen concentration at noon to ventilate them for a short time (about 5 minutes is enough), on those days when the pollen concentration is low.

Nor should we hang the clothes outside, to prevent pollen from sticking to it.

In air conditioning equipment it is important that we use anti-pollen filters and do not forget to change them frequently enough so that they do not stop being effective.

To clean it is advisable to use a damp cloth (to avoid removing particles) and to use a vacuum cleaner.

Finally, if we have a terrace or garden, avoid activities such as sweeping the terrace or mowing the lawn during the pollination season, as it can remove pollen particles that have been deposited on them. And if we have plants, avoid those that pollinate by air.

What to do when you can’t avoid being exposed to pollen?

Unfortunately, there will be times when we can’t help but go out and expose ourselves to pollen. In these cases, it is convenient to take some precautions to minimize our exposure to pollen:

  • Wear sunglasses, to protect our eyes from contact with pollen
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses during the pollination season, as pollen can accumulate on these and thus cause eye problems
  • Face masks can also help us minimize our exposure to pollen
  • When going by car, keep the windows closed and, as at home, also use anti-pollen filters in the car’s air conditioning.
  • When you get home, you should change your clothes and shower, as pollen can stick to your clothes and body. It is also advisable to take extreme hygiene in hands and face.

How can we reduce the symptoms of pollen allergy?

Even taking all possible precautions, it is difficult not to suffer from an allergic reaction on occasion. In case the symptoms are very strong or bothersome, we can always consult with the allergist to prescribe medication to mitigate them, as is the case with antihistamines, without forgetting to always follow the indications of said specialist.

Vithas hospitals are safe hospitals

Vithas’ 19 hospitals are safe hospitals for patients and professionals thanks to the implementation of strict safety protocols against covid-19. Among the measures implemented, the establishment of two different circuits stands out: one for people with symptoms compatible with covid-19, and the other for other patients.

Additionally, we supply masks and hydroalcoholic gel to all people who come to the hospital for any reason. In addition, the Group is carrying out massive virus detection tests on all personnel, who are equipped with all the necessary self-protection measures.

A security that has always been reinforced thanks to the fact that all Vithas hospitals implement the strict protocols of the Joint Commission International, world reference body that accredits patient safety and healthcare excellence.
